TRIO Student Support Services
TRIO Student Support Services was established at Coe College in 1978.
TRIO Student Support Services is a federal grant-funded program that provides academic tutoring, advising, career planning, scholarship resources, financial literacy, study skills, graduate school prep and visits, time management help, cultural enrichment and more.
We currently serve 216 Coe students.
To join TRIO SSS, you must be a U.S. citizen or registered permanent resident AND at least one of the following:
- A first-generation college student (neither parent nor guardian has received a baccalaureate degree), or
- Income eligible according to the federal government or
- Have a documented disability
You must also demonstrate academic need.

Academic Services
Academic Advising
TRIO staff serve as secondary advisors to students enrolled in TRIO SSS. They can give additional guidance with course selection, general education requirements, adding/dropping courses, etc.
Academic Coaching
TRIO academic coaches challenge students to think about their academics related to their personal and professional goals.
Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction
TRIO students are encouraged to apply to be a tutor or Supplemental Instruction leader in order to provide peer mentorship to other TRIO SSS participants.
Additional Services
Summer Bridge Program
Summer Bridge is a multiday program providing eligible incoming first-year students with a preview of Coe College courses and student life. Summer Bridge includes classes, skill-building, mentoring and opportunities to become familiar with the Cedar Rapids area.
Career Leadership & Development
Students can work with their academic coach to create a portfolio containing strength assessment tools, a resume and a cover letter. TRIO has an established relationship with C3 and can refer students for other career services.
Graduate and Professional School Preparation
Students are offered assistance with both the decision and process of applying to graduate school and/or professional school. Each year, TRIO students visit graduate and professional schools.
Additional Grant Money
The College Completion Challenge Grant is offered to students in their first and second year at Coe College who are active in the TRIO Program, Pell Grant eligible and in good academic standing. Applications are open in fall and spring semesters.
Financial Planning
Staff provides information and guidance to students on topics such as budgeting, completing the FAFSA and making financial decisions.
Cultural Enrichment
Students are invited to attend cultural events in the Cedar Rapids area. TRIO pays for costs associated with visits to events such as museums, art exhibits, theatre performances and more to enhance students' appreciation for the arts and other cultures.
