TRIO Student Support Services

TRIO Student Support Services has supported Coe College students since 1978. 

TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded program that provides personalized support to help students persist and graduate. Services include academic tutoring, one-on-one advising, career exploration, financial literacy, scholarship guidance, study strategies, time management and preparation for graduate or professional school (including campus visits). 

We currently serve 216 Coe students.

Eligibility

To participate in TRIO SSS, students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident AND meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • First-generation college student (neither parent/guardian has earned a bachelor's degree)
  • Income eligible based on federal guidelines
  • Have a documented disability

Students must also demonstrate academic need.

Academic Advising

TRIO SSS advisors offer guidance on course selection and academic policies.

Coaching icon

Academic Coaching & Tutoring

TRIO SSS provides individualized academic coaching to help students build study strategies, stay on track in their courses and connect academic progress to personal and professional goals. Students also have access to online tutoring support in a variety of subject areas.

Summer Bridge icon

Summer Bridge Program

Summer Bridge is a five-day pre-orientation program for eligible incoming first-year students. It provides an early introduction to Coe College academics and campus life through coursework, skill-building workshops, peer mentoring and opportunities to explore the Cedar Rapids community.

Financial Planning icon

Financial Aid and Literacy

TRIO SSS provides individualized support to help students complete the FAFSA, build budgeting skills and make informed financial decisions. Students also receive guidance in identifying and applying for scholarships.

Careers icon

Career Leadership & Development

Students work with their TRIO SSS advisor to build a career portfolio, including strengths assessments, a resume and a cover letter. Students also receive support in exploring career pathways and developing professional readiness skills.

Cultural icon

Academic Enrichment & Career Exploration

TRIO SSS supports students in engaging with the Cedar Rapids community through learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Activities may include museums, theatre, arts experiences and other opportunities that help students explore ideas, interests and potential career paths.

Graduate School icon

Graduate and Professional School Preparation

TRIO SSS supports students as they explore, plan for and apply to graduate or professional school programs. Students also have opportunities to visit campuses as part of their preparation.

Grants icon

College Completion Challenge Grant

This grant is available to eligible first- and second-year TRIO SSS students who receive the Pell Grant. Applications are accepted in the fall for spring disbursement.
