Working within the general framework of ongoing faculty projects, students contribute to the overall database of information, while at the same time having the flexibility to craft a study compatible with their own specific interests. For such research, many students create a senior honors thesis under the direction of a Coe faculty member, conducting a study of his or her own design.
Coe has strong relationships at local companies in Cedar Rapids that provide internship opportunities for sociology majors including Tanager Place, Hy-Vee human relations department and many nonprofits.
The Sociology Department highly recommends off-campus studies and internships in the field of sociology. Coe's New York City and Washington, D.C., terms are especially relevant off-campus experiences. During these semesters, students combine internships, independent study and hands-on experiences to complement their individual academic plans.
Individually designed internships provide an opportunity to meet educational and career goals through participation in a social service, business, industrial, research or health organization. The off-campus experiences that are right for you and your educational plan can be designed with the help of your faculty advisor.
