Successful Alumni
Coe students who have pursued our pre-engineering program have gone on to obtain advanced degrees from some of the most prestigious engineering schools in the country, including: Stanford, MIT, Northwestern, Lehigh, Vanderbilt, U. of Minnesota, and UCLA.
Many have then gone to excellent engineering companies like Rockwell Collins, Boeing, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Cargil.
Other students have also gone on to pursue advanced degrees or to obtain employment in the field immediately following graduation from Coe. Here is a look at what those graduates are doing today.
Amy Marquardt received a full ride to the University of Maryland, where she is currently attending the graduate program in Material Science and Engineering. While at Coe, Amy pursued many research opportunities, including attending the International Borate Conference in Himeji, Japan, and doing an internship at the Smithsonian Institution. She worked on glass research for two summers
Sara Campbell attended graduate school at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where she received the doctorate in Mechanical Engineering on a full fellowship. While at Coe she majored in physics, mathematics, and computer science, and she was active in the Physics Club, the National Council of Physics Students, sorority life, Ultimate Frisbee Club, and the volleyball team.
Sara did glass research for two summers while at Coe, working on infrared measurements of several exotic glass families. Her capstone experience came when she was able to spend three weeks in China in a collaborative optics project with Fudan University in Shanghai. Currently she is a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Nanoscale Reliability Group.
Eric Hemesath attended graduate school with a full fellowship at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, obtaining the doctorate in Materials Engineering. While at Coe, Eric majored in Physics and Computer Science, and participated in a full range of activities, including the baseball team, Physics Club, Student Senate (he was Vice-President of the student body), fraternity life, and the Writing Center.
Eric also took full advantage of the research opportunities afforded to him. He did glass research under Professor Mario Affatigato his first summer, presented his results at an international conference held at Coe, then went on to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory the next year. His capstone experience came in the year before graduation, when he spent the whole summer at the prestigious Max Planck Institute in Germany, a rare opportunity. Eric is currently a Process Engineer at Intel Corporation.
While at Coe, Colleen Hinman co-authored five journal articles in peer-reviewed journals and spent weeks in Japan in the laboratory of a scientific collaborator. After graduating from Coe, Colleen was accepted with a full ride to Iowa State University, where she obtained a master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering. She is currently an Instrumentation Specialist at Cargill Inc., an international producer and marketer of food and agricultural products.
Nate Lower obtained a full ride at the University of Missouri Rolla, where he received his Ph.D. in Material Science in 2004. While at Coe, he carried out glass research under Professor Steve Feller, and he attended the conference on Non-Crystalline Materials in Aberystwyth, Wales. Upon graduation with his doctorate he was hired by Rockwell Collins, where he is currently Senior Mechanical Engineer.
