Community Based Practicum

A Community-Based Practicum is an opportunity for students to work with a nonprofit organization in Cedar Rapids under the supervision of a faculty member on a project designed by the student and the organization.

This option will satisfy Coe’s Academic Practicum requirement.

Students will learn about the issues, problems and techniques associated with developing projects that address real-world problems, as well as apply the skills they have gained through academic study to provide services to community partners.

Authorization for the community-based project is determined by the supervising faculty member. A minimum of 140 hours of work is required. S/U basis only.

Steps to Take to Register for a Community-Based Practicum (CBP)
  1. Speak with the Director of Community Engagement and your faculty practicum advisor about your intent and/or interest in completing a CBP.
  2. Review the Community Based Practicum Guidelines.
  3. In consultation with your faculty practicum advisor and the DCE, complete the CBP Proposal Form.
  4. Once the form is completed with appropriate signatures, students must take the CBP Proposal Form to the Office of the Registrar and are then eligible to register for CBP 325.
