Pre-Med

Natalie Perez

Ready to Succeed

“You really can do anything you want if you work hard enough and always have a ‘take away.’”

Natalie Perez ’20 says the rigorous coursework and networking opportunities at Coe are setting her up for success. The pre-med student with a major in biology and minors in sociology and chemistry has her sights set on conducting research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Why Pre-Med at Coe?

Admission to medical and graduate school programs in health professions is based on more than GPA and test scores. Admission committees are seeking candidates with well-rounded resumes — internships, volunteer work and research experience. Coe’s pre-med program provides all three to ensure you’re a top candidate.

Coe’s pre-med course of study normally includes an emphasis on biology and chemistry, with additional study in physics and mathematics. Biology, chemistry and pre-med clubs can help you meet and interact with students who share your interests.

Special faculty advisors are available to confer with you on fulfilling requirements for postgraduate training and can facilitate internships and other practical experiences to help you learn more about your professional specialty interests.

Perfect location

Sam Fitzgerald ’18

“Coe is located in the perfect place for you to gain experiences in all aspects of the healthcare field. You're able to volunteer and work at hospitals, clinics and pharmacies to gain experiences that will shape the way you view the field and will set you apart from your peers.”

Sam worked with her advisor to develop a four-year plan that would prepare her for medical school and leave time to further her Spanish language development. During her junior year, Sam completed a month-long internship shadowing local physicians — she discovered her interest in surgery and made personal connections that aided her application to med school. Now Sam is enrolled in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
