Anthropology
Why Anthropology at Coe College?
Anthropology opens windows onto the human experience, both present and past.
As anthropologists, we ask questions that include these: What do we share as humans across space and time? What makes each cultural group unique? How have the natural environment and interactions with other groups shaped our — and their — cultural choices?
Through hands-on research as well as rich classroom experiences, Coe’s anthropology program offers students opportunities to learn about people’s varied lives around the world.
Imagine spending six weeks of your summer studying artifacts or rolling up your sleeves to help in an archeological dig in a small Greek village. Consider learning how to conduct interviews and using your skills to support a service organization in Cedar Rapids.
Whether your interests are local or global, contemporary or historical, studying anthropology at Coe will broaden your horizons. Anthropology’s wide reach and interconnectedness with other areas of study makes it a natural complement to courses across the curriculum, from history to sociology and art to economics. The skills you build as an anthropology student, such as teamwork, observation, analysis and writing, all translate well to internships and to work beyond Coe.
Anthropology graduates have gone on to the Peace Corps, to graduate study, and to a variety of jobs, both in the Cedar Rapids area and further afield.
