Emotional Support Animals (ESA) & Housing Accommodations

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)

Coe College supports residents keeping Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) in their college residence hall/apartment/housing unit. Before moving into a campus living space, Accessibility Services and Residence Life must approve any ESA.

A couple of things to note for ESA Requirements:

  • If you are interested in applying for an ESA and currently do not have one on Coe campus, please check out this Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Requirements document to understand what is needed.
  • Coe offers two opportunities per academic year to apply to have an ESA on campus (each semester starting on the 1st day of classes).
  • Accessibility Services will review applications for two weeks to gives students the chance to apply. Anyone can apply earlier but they will only be reviewed once each semester.
  • This process also applies to incoming/transfer students to Coe College.
  • Coe students who bring unapproved animals to campus are fined $250.00 for any unapproved animal found in the residence halls/apartments/houses.
  • Once approved by Accessibility Services and Residence Life, the ESA's handler/owner must fill out and submit through the Handler Agreement link each semester the ESA is on Coe campus. The Handler Agreement is not an approval form; it is only used to keep Coe updated on the Handler/ESA.

To start the process please use the links above for all your information. If you have further questions contact:

Housing Accommodations

Housing Accommodations can be supported for students who have a documented need from a licensed provider (physician, therapist, psychiatrist, etc).

New and returning students should contact Accessibility Services at accessibility@coe.edu to begin the process of seeking approval for housing accommodations.

Housing accommodations will be for the individual only and they will be placed accordingly. When it comes to housing in group settings such as New Apartment/E Ave/Kohawk Spirit House 1/Hamptons/Old Apartments, Residence Life will not pre-place students with accommodations and its group members. Because of the demand for these areas, students must follow the traditional room selection process for those spaces as that is fair to all Coe students. Coe College provides adequate single spaces on campus for all students and students with accommodations.
