Aviation Management & Flight Operations Student Checklist

All students must apply for admission and be enrolled at Coe College in order to take part in Coe’s Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in aviation management program and flight operations (professional pilot) courses. Admission to Coe College does not guarantee admission to the flight school.

To be accepted to the flight school, you must:

• Be at least 16 years of age at the time of your first solo flight and at least 17 years old at the time of initial pilot certification.
• Have a current Federal Aviation Administration Medical Certificate.
• Have an unexpired U.S. passport or a U.S.-issued birth certificate and valid driver's license to verify U.S. citizenship.

Medical Certificate

As a prerequisite for commencing flight training at Coe College, it is mandatory for all students to possess a valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certificate before undertaking solo flights. These certificates are issued by authorized Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) following the completion of an application process and a thorough physical examination.

• Please keep in mind the following information: Medical certificates come in three classes – first, second and third. Although a third-class medical certificate is the minimum requirement, it's advisable to obtain a second-class medical certificate.
  • First-class certificates are necessary for pilots who are using the privileges of an airline transport rating. 
  • Second-class medical certificates are required for pilots using the privileges of a commercial pilot certificate. 
  • Third-class medical certificates are sufficient for initial training purposes. 
• You may be denied a medical certificate because of medical and/or past legal issues. Every student should determine their eligibility for medical certification before beginning education for an aviation-related career. Should there be any medical or legal concerns that require attention, it is important to note there may be potential delays in the acquisition of your medical certificate. It is mandatory to possess a medical certificate prior to commencement of flight training. Therefore, acquiring your medical certificate well in advance is recommended to prevent potential delays.
• An important limitation to note is the color vision restriction, which bars pilots from flying at night or under signal gun control. It is crucial to promptly identify these issues to determine eligibility for flight training.
