Coe students (from left) Alex Brown (Dr. Bradman), Rashad Harris (Charles), Courtney Marti (Madame Arcati), Kelci de Haas (Ruth) and Amy Ketcherside (Mrs. Bradman) are featured in the upcoming Coe theatre production of "Blithe Spirit."

The Coe College Department of Theatre Arts will present the popular British comedy "Blithe Spirit" on Nov. 15-17 and 21-23 in Dows Theatre on the Coe campus. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, Nov. 17 show, which starts at 2 p.m.

"Blithe Spirit" is guest directed by Peter Craze, a highly respected acting teacher, who recently retired after more than 20 years with the Drama Studio of London, where he served as principal director for the past decade. Also highly regarded as an actor, he has mounted more than 70 productions all over the world, including at West End in London, in San Francisco, and at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City.

One of Noel Coward's most celebrated comedies, "Blithe Spirit" explores what might happen if a man's deceased wife returns from the grave to haunt his second marriage. Filled with erudite and witty banter, ghosts and apparitions, this delightful gem from 1941 once held the record for the longest running non-musical in London with 1,997 performances.

"'Blithe Spirit' is Noel Coward's scintillating nonsense play with ghosts, séances and poltergeists,” said Craze in his director's comments. "One of his few plays that does not satirize the society that he is depicting, this comedy is an exploration of vulnerable marriages seen through Coward's wit, sophistication, elegance and signature acidity."

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors. They can be purchased at the door, or by calling the Coe College Box Office at 399-8600, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, the Coe Alumni Office is hosting a reception and dinner option before the Nov. 16 performance, beginning at 6 p.m. in Clark Alumni House.
