The Coe College Department of Theatre Arts will present the musical mystery “Drood” on March 23 - 25 and 29 - 31 in Dows Theatre on the Coe campus.  All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, March 25 show, which starts at 2:30 p.m.

Seats are reserved, and tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors.  Tickets can be purchased at the door, or by calling the Coe College Box Office at 399-8600, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Playgoers also have the option to enjoy dinner, complete with a pre-performance talk given by the director, at Clark Alumni House prior to the performance on Friday, March 23.  Tickets for the dinner can be purchased for $20 by calling Linda Givvin at 399-8619.

Written by Rupert Holmes, “Drood” features an all-student cast and is staged by Coe Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Dennis Barnett, with musical direction by Michael Schnack and choreography by Carol Maxwell-Rezabek.

According to Barnett, "Drood promises to be great fun for the playgoers.  Set in a typical London theatre of the time, it is peopled by numerous shady characters who refer to themselves as 'actors' and for whom no joke is too cheap, no pratfall too stupid, nor no drama too historic," said Barnett.  "Expect the lowest level of humor and it is guaranteed that no one will be disappointed!"

Based on “The Mystery of Edward Drood,” the last literary work by Charles Dickens, “Drood” is a musical whodunnit.  Because Dickens died before finishing his novel, the identity of which character he actually intended to have “dunnit” remains to this day a tangled web of mystery.  The action takes place in a Victorian music hall, where a troupe of actors from that era try to work it all out, with a little bit of assistance from their audience.
