Eligibility:

  • The Coe College Elementary Honor Bands are open to students in grades 4, 5 and 6.
    Most 4th graders will be placed in the Crimson Honor Band, while most 5th and 6th graders will be selected for the Gold Honor Band.
  • The Coe College Junior Honor Band is open to students in grades 6, 7 and 8.
  • The Coe College Senior Honor Band is open to students in grades 9 through 12.

Based on the nominations, a committee at Coe College will select the bands: two Elementary Honor Bands (approximately 100 members each), one Junior Honor Band and one Senior Honor Band (approximately 100 members each). 6th grade students may be nominated for either the Elementary Honor Band or the Junior Honor Band. Every school submitting nominations will have at least one student selected.


Important Dates:

  • Monday, January 6, 2025 - Online nominations open
  • Friday, February 14, 2025 - Online nominations close
  • Monday, March 3 - Friday, March 14, 2025 - Selections announced, music delivered
  • Sunday, April 6, 2025 - Junior and Senior Honor Band chair auditions and rehearsal

Elementary Guest Conductor: Ann Kostelnick

Ann Kostelnick

Ann Kostelnick is in her 21st year teaching as a band director. Ms. Kostelnick currently serves as 5th grade band director in the Clear Creek Amana School District where she teaches 175 beginning band students. She has also held teaching positions in Cedar Falls, Hampton-Dumont, Waterloo, and Nora Springs, Iowa. In addition to band directing, Ms. Kostelnick taught applied clarinet and woodwind techniques at Waldorf College. Ms. Kostelnick received her Bachelor of Music Education from Iowa State University in 2004 and Master of Music Education Degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago in 2011. She has served as treasurer for the North Central Iowa Bandmasters Association. Ms. Kostelnick is a recipient of the NEIBA Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award - Elementary Level. She has enjoyed serving as guest conductor for several honor bands throughout Iowa. When not teaching, she enjoys hiking and running, volunteering as a Girls on the Run coach, and traveling around our beautiful planet.

The Coe College Junior Honor Band will be directed by Steve Shanley and the Coe College Senior Honor Band will be directed by Dr. William S. Carson.

Fees:

There is a $15.00 registration fee for students selected to the Elementary Honor Band and a $25.00 fee for students selected to the Junior and Senior Honor Bands. This fee will include lunch for the Elementary Honor Bands on April 12.

All Honor Band participants are encouraged to attend the Coe College Concert Band performance on Saturday, April 12, at 7:00 pm, with a guest conductor to be announced.


Concert tickets for the Honor Bands should be ordered in advance:

Tickets will be available for purchase in the lobby of Sinclair Auditorium before the concerts, but lines could be very long. We strongly recommend purchasing the tickets online in advance at coe.universitytickets.com.
