Correcting the Narrative. Thursday November 14, 2024.
Correcting the Narrative is a public awareness, story-telling campaign that challenges perceptions about people with criminal records in order to remove barriers and support inclusive communities. Screening of short videos highlighting the successes, humanity, and agency of people who have been in prison, followed by a panel discussion with local experts including Mike Cervantes, director of Living Beyond the Bars, an Iowa non-profit offering reentry assistance to those leaving prison; Colin Ryan, Treatment Services Manager, Sixth Judicial District; and Geneva Williams of the Tama County Prosecutor’s Office. Discussion moderated by Shannon Ross, founder of The Community, a non-profit organization based in Wisconsin that provides support for people who have been involved with the criminal legal system.
Higher Education in Prison Roundtable. February 27, 2024. Roundtable panelists who pursued post-secondary education while incarcerated will discuss the benefits and challenges of college in and after prison, share their experiences and take audience questions. 7:00 pm, Center for Health & Society lobby. Free and open to the public.
Lives Behind Bars: Community Film Discussion Series. Spring through Fall 2022
“Lives Behind Bars,” a free film discussion series hosted at Coe College creates conversation in the Cedar Rapids area about the impact of incarceration on individuals and their communities. Funded in part by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the film series is open to all and seeks to bring together those with a range of backgrounds and experiences for a productive exchange of perspectives.
Iowa Human Rights Research Conference. April 2022, Drake University. Hosted by the Iowa Network of Human Rights Academics and the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, the annual Iowa Human Rights Research Conference features presentations by students and faculty members from colleges and universities across Iowa.
