Coe takes second in Campus Race to Zero Waste
Coe College joined 200 colleges and universities in the Campus Race to Zero Waste challenge with the National Wildlife Federation...and won second place for per capita recycling among small colleges! Kohawks earned third place nationally regardless of college size with 36.45 pounds per person recycled, which is an increase of one pound of recycling per capita over last year’s numbers.
Student volunteers assisted Coe’s physical plant staff with collecting and tracking all the recycling across campus.
The challenge as a whole reached 3.4 million students, faculty and staff, representing 41 states. In total, 29.4 million pounds of waste was donated, composted or recycled, which prevented 29,108 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released. That’s the equivalent of saving the annual emissions from 6,128 cars!
