Beginning fall 2019, Coe music majors may choose an emphasis in music industry or pre-music therapy. The new emphases are in addition to existing musical theatre and jazz studies options.
“Our Music Department is continuing to expand its unique degree offerings,” Coe Music Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Music Brett Wolgast said. “Our musical emphases options provide students with specific coursework and practical training in various music-related careers.”
The music industry emphasis prepares students to excel in a range of areas within the broader industry by combining a traditional music degree with courses that emphasize core business skills and audio technology.
Possible career paths in the music industry include artists and repertoire (A&R) administrator, booking agent, artist manager, publicist, recording engineer, concert promoter, live sound technician or artistic director of a nonprofit organization.
Multi-year involvement with 399 Records, Coe’s student-run record label, will allow students to apply what they have learned and experiment with new ideas.
Music therapy is a growing interdisciplinary field of study and career path. The use of music therapy in health professions continues to expand and is becoming an integral part of the healing process.
The pre-music therapy emphasis prepares students for application to a music therapy certification program. Students take courses intended to better prepare them for future study at an academic program approved by the American Music Therapy Association.
Coe’s Music Department provides a variety of music degrees and concentrations, combining the intensity of conservatory training with the breadth of a diverse liberal arts education. Coe College has been a member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1962.
