From Perception to AI: The Rise of Large Language Models and Their Implications For Us All
As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly ubiquitous, understanding its foundations and limitations is more crucial than ever. This four-part forum series presented by Associate Professor of Data Science Michael Stobb will trace the fascinating evolution of large language models — the powerful AI engines behind many modern applications — to demystify AI, explore its potential and navigate its societal impact. The first session will delve into AI's origins, from initial dreams of “thinking” machines to early programs “learning” through trial and error. Week two’s session will unpack the breakthroughs behind modern AI. It will explain in simple terms how "deep learning" (AI systems that learn from enormous datasets by processing information through multiple increasingly refined stages) and new computer architectures enable AI to understand complex information, including human language, with remarkable nuance. In week three, we will critically examine AI's societal influence, from its effects on jobs and creativity to crucial questions of fairness, privacy and truth in an era of AI-generated content. The final week’s session will explore practical applications, offering insights into using AI tools effectively while fostering critical thinking. Over the course of the series, we will come to understand the reality of AI, its profound potential for our lives and how we can engage confidently with this revolutionary technology.
Thursday Forum is held in Kesler Auditorium on the first floor of Hickok Hall. Each weekly session begins with registration and refreshments from 8:45-9:15 AM, followed by the lecture until 11:30 AM. The presentations blend lecture, media such as film and music, and discussion.
Admission to each four-week forum series is $40. Admission to individual lectures and one- and two-week forums is $12 per week. Admission includes the lecture and morning refreshments of coffee, tea and pastries. Payment can be made in person on Thursday mornings by cash or personal check.
