Coe From Your Couch: How to Read a Pauline Letter: A Basic Introduction
In the New Testament, thirteen letters are attributed to Paul, one of the most important figures in Early Christianity. The letters of Paul are the earliest writings from this new movement that we still have. However, they are dense and difficult to understand. Even the New Testament letter 2 Peter acknowledges this, encouraging its readers to pay attention to what Paul says in his letters, even though "there are some things in them hard to understand” (2 Peter 3:16). In this webinar, Meira Kensky, Joseph E. McCabe Associate Professor of Religion, will provide some basic guidance for approaching these letters. She will also discuss Greek epistolography – the theory and art of letter writing – and talk about how the study of epistolography can help us decipher and interpret Paul’s letters.
