Rachel Breen and the Bluestockings Artists Collective
Spring 2020 Kocher Visiting Artist Rachel Breen relies on nontraditional materials (rocks, thread, etc.) and specific exhibition spaces to help her explore social concerns, such as women’s rights, the textile industry and clothing consumption, and agriculture and the ecosystem. Breen, who considers herself as much an activist as an artist, works with numerous social justice organizations, which also provides information and inspiration for her art. Funds from the Robert and Joan Kocher Visual Arts Endowment support this exhibition and Breen’s visiting artist award.
Active in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor, Bluestockings members support one another in their creative practices while addressing the systemic issues that limit representation and success in the arts for gender marginalized people in particular. Their group exhibition highlights the diversity of materials used while advocating for a common message of intersectional feminism and solidarity with all communities affected by systemic oppression. The collective is open to all women, trans-identifying, non-binary and femme-identifying artists who desire a supportive space to critique, share business tips, raise awareness and create.
