Academic Safety Plan

Face Coverings

  • The personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines outlined in the Safe Campus Initiative also apply to the academic experience. Face coverings must be worn by faculty, staff and students in all indoor public spaces unless they are designated as mask free. They will not be required while working alone in one’s office.
  • Face coverings must be worn outdoors when social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, such as during passing periods between classes.
  • Coe will provide up to two face coverings for all faculty (to be distributed in early August).

Social Distancing in Educational Spaces

  • Social distancing must be maintained throughout the educational experience. Faculty, staff and students will be required to maintain 6 feet of distance from each other before, during and after class. In each classroom, designated areas will be marked off for the instructor. Instructors will be expected to stay in this zone while teaching, and students will be expected to stay in their socially distanced spaces.
  • All classroom spaces will be set up with chairs and tables at least 6 feet apart.
  • When working together in classes and labs, students and faculty will maintain 6 feet of distance from each other.
  • All communal materials and supplies should be wiped down before use. Sharing or passing around of materials should be avoided.
  • Each faculty member will be given their own set of whiteboard markers and erasers.
  • Students and faculty are allowed to have beverages in class as long as they can drink through a straw while still wearing a face covering.
  • Instructors will be asked to wipe down any equipment used at the conclusion of the class. Cleaning supplies will be available in every classroom.
  • When classrooms are unoccupied, staff will clean equipment more thoroughly.

Classroom Guidelines

  • We are counting on all faculty, staff and students to maintain an atmosphere of citizenship and community while taking care of the Kohawk next to them. Students will be required to follow the Safe Campus Initiative guidelines and will be asked to leave class if they choose not to do so.
  • Faculty are encouraged, though not required, to have students turn in assignments electronically. If students submit paper assignments, faculty should avoid closely handling papers for 24 hours before grading because that is the maximum length of time current information says the virus can live on paper. Faculty will inform students there will be this delay in returning material.

Illness

  • Normally, faculty often teach through colds and mild illnesses. In this environment, they are encouraged to avoid doing so and to take the day off from teaching.
  • Students are encouraged to stay home from class if they are experiencing any form of illness.
  • Faculty are requested to eliminate consequences for students missing class so they do not feel pressure to show up against their better judgment.
  • If a student is exposed to COVID-19 and misses class due to quarantine, faculty should work with the student individually to help them keep up with course requirements

Movement and Safety Outside the Classroom

  • Students and faculty will be asked to practice social distancing as they enter and exit classrooms.
  • All buildings with multiple stairwells will have a designated staircase for going “up” and a designated staircase for going “down,” indicated by signage.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be installed on every floor of academic buildings.
  • Maximum occupancy for all elevators in academic spaces is limited to one person.

Student-Faculty Meetings Outside of Class

  • Regular office hours and student access to faculty are hallmarks of the Coe experience. These dynamics will continue; however, when feasible, faculty are strongly encouraged to hold office hours and student meetings virtually (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).
  • When in-person meetings are required, all faculty and students are expected to maintain 6 feet of distance between each other. When this is not possible, plexiglass barriers will be installed.
  • There will be additional spaces on campus designated for individual meetings. These spaces will be cleaned after each use.
