Each Departmental Writing Plan describes the department's approach to writing: what it means to write, the kinds of learning experiences used to teach writing and the courses which carry Writing Emphasis credit.
Departmental Writing Plans
Because the conventions, forms, and purposes of writing vary by discipline, Writing Across the Curriculum allows for wide latitude in how writing is integrated into the teaching and learning environment. To guide the integration of writing into the disciplines, each department relies on a department-authored Writing Plan which articulates the overarching role and purpose of writing in their curriculum. Writing Plans address the following questions:
- What does your discipline value in written communication?
- What kinds of texts do scholars and practitioners in your discipline create?
- What kinds of skills or experiences help students learn to write in those ways?
- And, what courses or assignments are best suited to giving students access to and practice in these skills and experiences?
To learn more about what writing looks like in various departments, browse the list of plans below. These are living documents, which may be revised as departments adapt to new faculty, changing priorities or disciplinary/pedagogical development. As such, these documents will be updated as needed.
