Our History
The Coe College Writing Center was founded in 1986, with a staff of seven writing consultants and one director. It was housed in the basement of Stuart Hall in what is now two restrooms. Within a few years the Writing Center expanded, occupying a space that had previously been a small classroom. In the fall of 2000, the Writing Center moved into the old registrar's office, and the staff nearly doubled in size. This cozy atmosphere quickly became known for good conversation, cheap coffee, and comfortable seating. In the spring of 2012, the WC moved once again to Gage Annex, where it occupied a space behind the Coe Bookstore and continued to provide caffeinated beverages and scintillating discourse. With the introduction of the Learning Commons in Fall 2015, the Writing Center moved to its current location in Stewart Memorial Library. The Writing Center was moved into the Learning Commons space to provide students with access to resources all available in one centralized location.
Since its first year, the Writing Center staff has grown dramatically from 7 to around 60 undergraduate consultants conducting over 2,000 writing conferences each year. CWC staff members have published dozens of articles and essays in professional journals and have given over 120 presentations at state, regional and international conferences.
