Academic Year Component

Once a student is admitted to the Upward Bound Program, they make a commitment to attend tutoring once a week. Tutoring sessions at the Cedar Rapids Tutoring Center are held Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:10. We also hold tutoring sessions on Sunday and Monday nights from 7:00-8:40 p.m. Students are required to attend only one of the seven options, but may choose to attend additional tutoring sessions if they want or need to. In addition to the Cedar Rapids Tutoring center, we also have tutoring at Anamosa High School and Prairie High School. Tutoring is designed to help students complete and understand their homework assignments, as well as develop the productive study habits necessary for success in education beyond high school. By attending tutoring a student earns a stipend of $7.50 per week.

In addition to the weekly tutoring sessions the school year component involves two mandatory Saturday meetings. One is scheduled in September, and one in the spring. In the September meeting we organize the school year tutoring session, identify what days students are going to attend tutoring, and generally review information necessary for academic success. In the spring meeting, we have a summer orientation program; we review the summer schedule, register for classes, and take some standardized tests.

Occasionally during the school year, we may invite students to activities, but attendance is not mandatory.
