Polk
Elementary School
Polk is a year-round school for grades K-5. It is located at
1500 B Ave. NE, approximately two blocks from campus, near the
Coe football field. Polk is a Title 1 School, meaning that the
majority of its students are from poverty stricken homes; over
90% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This however,
does not diminish the eagerness of the students, quality of the
education or the home-like environment.
Coe’s partnership with Polk is found on many levels. We
have workstudy students who are assigned to Polk to help in a
classroom, volunteers during the school day and at the after school
program, AACE, and students who are "lunch buddies"
with a student at Polk. Several education classes at Coe have
also gone to Polk to fullfill their field experience and Polk
students have come to Coe for swim lessons. Among other events,
Coe has an annual Giving Tree to collect school items that Polk
needs, sometimes their kids will come to Coe and sing in the lunch
room, and in the past Coe has hosted Polk for the an annual Halloween
Trick or Treat event.
Johnson
School of the Arts
Johnson School of the Arts is a school for grades K-5 and has
an emphasis in the Arts. Their students study visual art, dance
and vocal performance as well as the core subjects such as Reading
and Math. They are located about a mile away from Coe on 355 18th
Street SE.
Coe’s partnership with Johnson is fairly new, but still
active. Coe students volunteer their time working with the afterschool
programs in dance, art and music. They can also be found tutoring
math or reading with the students. A recent partnership event
with Johnson was the "America Reads Day", in which Coe
students read to the Johnson kids. Last year, Johnson took part
in the Halloween Trick or Treat at Coe. Still in the works are
more Coe/Johnson events to come!
McKinley
Middle School
McKinley Middle School is a school for grades 6-8. They are located
at 620 Tenth Street SE, less than two miles from Coe. They are
a fairly large school with each grade divided into "houses."
Each "house" has one teacher for English, Math, Social
Studies and Science. The students stay in their group for those
classes, and then are mixed together for special courses. McKinley
offers a number of different extracurricular activities such as
intramural sports, competitive sports, bands, orchestra, and choirs.
The partnership with McKinley is the newest for Coe, so activities
between the schools are just beginning to grow. Several Coe students
went to McKinley to volunteer with some of the kids with learning
disabilities during the ITBS testing. In the future we look forward
to more Coe/McKinley activities, including a "day in college"
for the McKinley students.
