The renowned Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company will perform as part of the Marquis Series at Coe College on Friday, Oct. 16, beginning at 8 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. Famous for its bright colors, the unity of content and form, and the vivid embodiment of its stage concept, this magnificent folk dance ensemble has embraced the beauty of its native Ukraine and the wisdom of its people as well as the folk tradition of humor and optimism.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students and seniors. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling the Coe College Box Office at 319-399-8600, Monday - Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Each performance of the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company is a romantic, elevated, passionate and exciting show. The ensemble's diverse concert programs presenting the exquisite charm of Ukranian folk dancing and the wealth of its traditions have been warmly received by audiences all over the world. Founded by well-known Ukranian ballet-masters Pavlo Virsky and Mykola Bolotov in 1937, the group continues to create new dances, full of surprises and delight, under the direction of Myroslav Vantaukh. The group is based in Kyiv, Ukraine.
At Coe, the group will perform more than a dozen traditional Ukrainian favorites, culminating with the "Hopak" (Hopping Dance). This dance form is comprised of numerous bravura solo performances and breathtaking feats, with spectacular, dynamic and intricate choreographic forms. With its incredible costuming and choreography, the "Hopak" is the quintessential Ukrainian art form.
The Coe College Lecture and Performance Series is funded in part by a gift from the estate of Sarah Marquis in honor of her father, Dr. John A. Marquis, who was president of Coe College from 1909-1920. The purpose of the series is to bring entertainment and educational experiences to the Coe campus for the benefit of the entire community.
