When James Pesek '18 learned he would be racing within 275 miles of his alma mater, he approached representatives at Coe and asked for permission to use the college's signature colors and logo.
Pesek made a pit stop at Coe June 20 on his way from his hometown of Harrisonville, Missouri, to the Pirelli World Challenge Doubleheader at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Pesek had a smile from ear to ear as he greeted his former football coaches and showed off his newly wrapped Kohawk race car on Clark Field.
"I've always loved cars. It feels so good to represent Coe in the area," Pesek said. This year marks Pesek's first full pro-racing season. He was beyond excited to race with the Kohawk on his Ford Mustang GT4. The Elkhart Lake race was the closest in proximity to Iowa so he felt it was the perfect time to sport his Coe pride.
Steve and Tyler Staker, Pesek's football coaches while he was at Coe, made the trip to Elkhart Lake to watch him race. "I've loved racing since I was a kid, it was such a thrill to see James drive by in our colors!" said coach Steve Staker. "I swelled up with pride and kept yelling, 'Go James Go'!"
The Elkhart Lake race took place on a four mile track and was James’ sixth race of the season. He has the capacity to reach speeds of 160-170 miles per hour in his Coe-wrapped Mustang.
Pesek finished both races of the June 23-24 doubleheader with a race time of 52:57.989, 91.18 MPH and a race time of 52:06.922, 92.67 MPH, respectively. Pesek certainly deserves a checkered flag for his Coe spirit!
