Cedar Rapids has been selected as one of "America's 10 Best Places to Grow Up" by U.S. News and World Report. The list, along with an article and slideshow, was posted on www.usnews.com on August 19, 2009.

Criteria for selection were based on data gathered from OnBoard Informatics, which provides U.S. News and World Report with all of the data points in its "Best Places to Live" tool. The tool is a database with 2,000 locales throughout the United States that have a population of at least 10,000 and a crime rate below or equal to the national average.

A number of data points are considered, including crime rate, area schools, abundant green space, recreational activities, cultural activities and kids per square mile. The search was then narrowed down by places with many recreational activities specifically for children.

Other cities included were Virginia Beach, Va.; Madison, Ala.; San Jose, Calif.; Overland Park, Kan.; Boston, Mass.; Denver, Colo.; Rochester, Minn.; Plano, Texas, and Edison, N.J.

Cedar Rapids consistently ranks as one of the top communities in which to live, work, play and raise a family. Recent accolades Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities have earned include being among the best places in America to live, educate children, do business, commute and volunteer. It's been called one of the "Best Places for Business and Careers" by Forbes magazine and was ranked #4 on a list of "Next Cities" with a population between 100,000 - 200,000 by Next Generation Consulting.
