Writer, poet and essayist Jenny Zhang will read from her critically acclaimed debut collection of short stories, "Sour Heart." The event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Perrine Galley of Stewart Memorial Library on the Coe College campus. The event is open to the public at no charge.

Zhang is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and has published poems, essays and stories in Harper's, Buzzfeed and Rookie. Released in August, "Sour Heart" is published by Lenny, Lena Dunham's imprint at Random House.

Since its publication, "Sour Heart" has earned praise from literary critics. According to The New Yorker, "Jenny Zhang's astounding short-story collection, 'Sour Heart,' combines ingenious and tightly controlled technical artistry with an unfettered emotional directness that frequently moves, within single sentences, from overwhelming beauty to abject pain." The Today Show characterized the book of short stories as, "Brilliant... humorous...filled with love," while the New York Magazine called "Sour Heart" "A forceful performance and one of the knockout fiction debuts of the year."

The event is sponsored by the Coe English Department. For more information on the program, call 319-399-8605.
