Celebrated musician Gustavo Romero will return to Coe College for a piano recital featuring the works of Granados, Mompou and Albeniz, as well as Emma Lou Diemer's "Piano Sonata No. 3." The concert will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, beginning at 2 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Romero has a stellar reputation for both the technical brilliance and interpretive depth of his playing, as well as his commitment to an in-depth exploration of individual composers. For the past several years, Romero has dedicated his focus toward preparing a series of concerts featuring music of one composer each year. Thus far, he has presented works of Chopin, Bach, Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Haydn and Händel, including complete piano sonata cycles of Beethoven and Mozart among others.
In celebration of 150th year of Granados' birth, Romero has presented piano recitals featuring the music of this great composer on four continents. Among other cities, performances took place in Belfast, Ho Chi Minh City, Kyoto and Pretoria. Future performances are scheduled for Capetown, Shanghai, Bejing, Taipei, Bangkok and Singapore.
Romero has performed in the world's leading concert halls. The musician regularly performs with leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Pops and others worldwide.
The Washington Post has called Romero "a pianist of genius." He has been featured by National Public Radio, BBC Radio and Radio France. A feature film about his life and artistry was produced in 2012 by The Snapshots Music and Art Foundation, entitled "Portrait in Piano." His recordings include works by Chopin, Mompou, Debussy, Albeniz, Scarlatti and the five Beethoven concerti with the English Chamber Orchestra.
Romero is a graduate of the Julliard School and serves as a professor of piano at the University of North Texas at Denton.
The performance is sponsored by Friends of Music at Coe and is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the organization. For more information, call 319-399-8521.
