Essa Kazim, the chairman of Borse Dubai and the Dubai Financial Market, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree on Sunday, May 10, at 10 a.m. on the Stewart Memorial Library Mall.
Kazim, a 1985 graduate of Coe, began his career as a senior analyst in the Research and Statistics Department of the United Arab Emirates Central Bank in 1988. In 1993, he moved to the Dubai Department of Economic Development as director of planning and development. He was then appointed as director general of the Dubai Financial Market from 1999 through 2006.
Kazim is currently chairman of the board of the Dubai Statistics Center, a director of the Dubai International Financial Center Authority, a member of the Dubai Council for Economic Affairs, and a director of NASDAQ Dubai. In addition, he is a member of the Economy and Trade Committee in Dubai, a director of Noor Islamic Bank, a director of the General Pension and Social Security Authority, a member of the Financial Advisory Council, and a member of NASDAQ OMX's board of directors.
In addition to his bachelor's in mathematics, economics and computer science from Coe, Kazim holds a master's in economics from the University of Iowa and a master's in total quality management from the University of Wollongong.
Kazim will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Commercial Science degree at Coe.
The baccalaureate speaker is the Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence, who serves as the Peter Marshall Associate Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. An ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA), Florence will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree at commencement.
Florence holds a bachelor's degree in history from Yale, and a Master of Divinity Degree and a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. After graduating from seminary in 1988, she spent five years as an associate pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, and then moved with her family to New Jersey where she completed her doctorate. In 1998, she joined the faculty of Columbia. Florence's first book, "Preaching as Testimony," was published by Westminster John Knox Press in 2007.
Degrees to be conferred at commencement
At Coe's commencement, President James Phifer will confer Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Music, and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees on nearly 290 graduates.
The college will also confer honorary doctorates on Essa Kazim and the Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence.

Saturday, May 9
10 a.m. - Academic Honors Convocation in Dows Theatre.
1 p.m. - Nurses' Pinning Ceremony in Cherry Auditorium of Peterson Hall.
1:30 p.m. - Phi Beta Kappa initiates will be honored at an induction ceremony in the Perrine Gallery of Stewart Memorial Library.
3 p.m. - Baccalaureate service in Sinclair Memorial Auditorium.
Sunday, May 10
10 a.m. - Graduates will ring the Victory Bell in front of Eby Fieldhouse and then proceed across campus, escorted by the faculty, for the start of commencement exercises on the Stewart Memorial Library lawn. Graduates will be honored at an outdoor reception following commencement. In case of inclement weather, the commencement ceremony will be held in Eby Fieldhouse.
