Coe College will observe International Archaeology Day with a series of exhibits and demonstrations on ancient technology and crafts. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. on the Stewart Memorial Library quad. It is free and open to the public.
Focusing on technology before the year AD 1500, the featured activities will include flint knapping, hide scraping and processing, fire starting processing, bone marrow extraction, early Euro-American and Native American games, spinning and weaving, and Roman oven cooking. An artifact/archaeology display tent will be on site from the Office of the State Archaeologist.
This International Archaeology Day event is sponsored by the Iowa Society, Archaeological Institute of America; the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist; the University of Iowa Departments of Anthropology, Art History and Classics; and the Coe College Anthropology program.
