Coe College will celebrate Homecoming Oct. 7-9 with the theme "Something Old - Something New." Alumni, friends and community members are invited to campus for what promises to be a memorable weekend filled with activities and fun, as well as to embrace change and celebrate tradition.
Among the featured events are the all-alumni celebration under the big top and silent auction, and the all-alumni recognition reception. The annual Homecoming Showcase Concert will be held, as well as athletic contests, including Kohawk football versus Central College. The 5k Run and Walk, the Homecoming parade and the brat 'n' beverage tent are among the many events, activities and gatherings planned.
Reunion celebrations will include those from the classes of 1966, 1976, 1980-82, 1991, 2000-02 and 2006, plus the Golden Alumni classes prior to 1966. Affinity gatherings will be held for the writing and creative writing majors 10th anniversary, Student Alumni Association 25th anniversary, Coe Writing Center 30th anniversary, Lambda Chi Alpha 70th anniversary and Tau Kappa Epsilon 100th anniversary.
Friday, Oct. 7 events
On Friday, Oct. 7, there will be several events throughout the day. At noon, the Quarterback Club will have lunch in C.J. Lynch Room as the Coe football coaches preview the Homecoming game. Golden Alumni (classes 1966 and prior) will gather at the golden garden party in Clark Alumni House at 1:30 p.m. The Common Hour at 3 p.m. in Kesler Lecture Hall of Hickok Hall will celebrate the writing of Coe Authors, followed by a book signing at 4:15 p.m. Coe Play Walk - a series of one-act plays directed and performed by students - will also be held at 4:45 p.m. in various locations around campus.
The 44th annual Coe Athletic Hall of Fame reception and dinner will take place in Gage Memorial Union beginning at 5:45 p.m. This year's dinner will feature the induction of Henry Bruce '76 (basketball), Dawn Rayner Herber '96 (track and field), Michelle Patterson Illian '96 (softball), and Sandra O'Hara Kaloupek '87 (volleyball). In addition, Iowa Conference championship teams from softball in 2000 and men's tennis from 2001 and 2002.
Members of Lambda Chi Alpha will hold their 70th anniversary at 6 p.m. in Clark Alumni House.
The Homecoming Showcase Concert begins at 7 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. This free concert will feature Coe's performing ensembles: Chorale, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra.
New this year, an all-alumni celebration will be held under a big-top tent starting at 7:30 p.m. The event will include music provided by Shortcut to Nowhere, dancing and the annual silent auction. Themed beverages and hors d'oeuvres featuring this year's Homecoming theme will be served. The Homecoming pep rally and coronation will wrap up Friday's festivities at 9 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 8 events
Events on Saturday, Oct. 8 begin with the 28th annual 5k Run and Walk at Clark Field at 8 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., an alumni volleyball game will be played in Eby Fieldhouse. The all-alumni recognition reception will begin with a light breakfast at 9:30 a.m. in the Learning Commons in Stewart Memorial Library, followed by a program at 10:15 a.m. The Alumni Award of Merit will be presented to Bruce Spivey, M.D. '56 and Herbert Brunkhorst, Ph.D. '66. Terry Hiebert '75 will receive the Distinguished Service Award.
The annual Homecoming parade around Clark Field will begin at 11:30 a.m. Following the parade, the 26th annual brat 'n beverage tent, sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, will be set up on C Avenue between 14th Street and 15th Street. This is a popular meeting place for alumni, parents, students and friends to tailgate before the game.
Kickoff for the Homecoming football game is set for 1 p.m. at Clark Field. The Kohawks will suit up to play Central.
Special class receptions and dinners will be held late Saturday afternoon and evening. The groups include: Tau Kappa Epsilon and classes of 1966, 1976, 1980-82, 1991, 2000-02, and 2006.
Sunday, Oct. 9 events
On Sunday, Oct. 9, the Writing Center 30th anniversary bunch will be held at 10 a.m. in Clark Alumni House. An informal brunch will be provided by Sodexo Dining Services at 10:45 a.m.
