Iowa Campus Compact (IACC) announced the winners of the 2016 Engaged Campus Awards. In this third year of awards, a record number of nominations were received: 39 in total from 14 colleges and universities across the state. Those nominated represent an impressive breadth and depth of higher education and community partnerships, community-engaged scholarship, service-learning and community service.
This year two Coe College students, Shannon Zelek '17 and Mikaila Matt '16 were named ICAP Members of the Year. Zelek is a native of Rockford, Illinois, and studies psychology at Coe. For her service-learning opportunity, she has worked extensively with Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois.
Originally from Great Falls, Montana, Matt graduated with majors in political science and French. During her time at Coe, she was involved in the Cedar Rapids Dance Marathon, an event that raises funding for University of Iowa Children’s Hospital through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
The members of Iowa Campus Compact serve the civic mission of strengthening higher education by engaging active citizens and working in their communities to address challenges. It goes beyond the private goods that higher education can create such as workforce skills, privately held knowledge and personal financial gain through its contributions to faculty, staff, student community service-learning courses and community-engaged scholarship.
Iowa Campus Compact (IACC) is a statewide association of college and university presidents providing leadership for the civic mission of higher education. The group strengthens the capacity of member colleges and universities to prepare all students to become engaged citizens.
