A large book sale comprising more than 7,000 books owned by the late David Goodwin, Marvin D. Cone Associate Professor of Art at Coe College, will be held at Stewart Memorial Library April 1-3, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The public is invited to the sale, with book prices starting at $3.
All proceeds from the sale will support The David Goodwin Endowment for the Arts at Coe. This fund will be used to help defray the cost of student travel off-campus and abroad.
Goodwin served as a member of Coe's Art Department from 1974 until his death on Sept. 3, 2008. He was honored and respected by generations of Coe faculty, staff and students, making many contributions throughout his tenure at the college as an artist, scholar, mentor, teacher, colleague and friend to many.
An avid reader and bibliophile, Goodwin's hobby of reading and the pursuit of books resulted in a personal collection of more than 9,000 volumes. The Goodwin family has generously donated these books to Coe. Approximately 2,000 of the books will be accessioned into the Stewart Memorial Library collection. The remainder will be available at the three-day book sale.
The collection represents the wide range of Goodwin's intellectual interests. While the majority are works of fiction, there is also a large group of art-related books. Other fields represented include philosophy, film, sociology, history, Asian studies, the ancient world, architecture, and drama.
