Coe College will celebrate its Homecoming Oct. 15-18 with the theme "Sustainable Coe - Together for the Future." Alumni, friends and community members are invited to campus for what promises to be a memorable weekend filled with activities and fun, as well as to learn about the importance of sustainability.
Among the featured events are the Make Your Move for Coe celebration and silent auction, the Heritage Club dinner, and the all-alumni recognition reception. The annual Homecoming Showcase Concert will be held, as well as athletic contests, including Kohawk football versus Simpson College. The 5k Run and Walk, a gasoline-free Homecoming parade and the brat 'n beverage tent are among the many events, activities and gatherings planned.
Reunion class celebrations will include 2005, 1994-96, 1990, 1969-75 and 1965. The Coe Golden Alumni classes of 1940, 1945, 1950, 1955 and 1960 will also be recognized. Affinity gatherings will be held for the jazz band, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Tau and Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia’s 85th anniversary. Athletic reunions will include soccer, track, volleyball and the 1955 and 1964 Midwest Conference championship football teams.
On Friday, Oct. 16, there will be several alumni panels throughout the day focusing on the sustainability theme. This will include a health theme panel and lunch, and a sustainability theme panel. At noon, the Quarterback Club will have lunch in Charlie's P.U.B. as the Coe football coaches preview the Homecoming game. The Common Hour at 3 p.m. in Cherry Auditorium of Peterson Hall will focus on sustainability at Coe.
The 43rd annual Coe Athletic Hall of Fame reception and dinner will take place in Gage Memorial Union beginning at 5:45 p.m. This year's dinner will feature the induction of Chris Weih '97 (basketball), Rajesh Venkatraman '96 (tennis), Peggy Schmitt Goerdt '90 (softball) and Coach Bob Timmons (softball).
The Homecoming Showcase Concert begins at 6:45 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. This free concert will feature Coe's performing ensembles: Chorale, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra.
At 8 p.m. (showtime 8:30 p.m.), the Make Your Move Campaign will be kicked off at a special event in Eby Fieldhouse. During this momentous celebration, long-awaited plans will be announced to benefit scholars and athletes with essential campus enhancements. The Homecoming pep rally and coronation will wrap up Friday's festivities at 9:30 p.m.
Events on Saturday, Oct. 17 begin with the 27th annual 5k Run & Walk at Clark Field at 8 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., an alumni volleyball game will be played in Eby Fieldhouse. New this year, an all-alumni recognition reception will begin with a light breakfast at 9:45 a.m. in the Sinclair lobby, followed by a program in Sinclair Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. The Alumni Award of Merit will be presented to Gary Schlarbaum '65. Robert Trimpl '60 will receive the Distinguished Service Award. Mason Kuhn '00 and Megan Gilligan '05 will be honored as recipients of the Young Alum Award.
The annual Homecoming parade around Clark Field will be gasoline free this year, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Following the parade, the 25th annual brat 'n beverage tent will be set up on the corner of D Avenue and 14th Street. This is a popular meeting place for alumni, parents, students and friends to tailgate before the game.
Kickoff for the Homecoming football game is set for 2 p.m. at Clark Field. The Kohawks will suit up to play Simpson. Athletic Hall of Fame inductees as well as the Midwest Conference championship football teams will be introduced prior to the game at 1:40 p.m.
Special class receptions and dinners will be held late Saturday afternoon and evening. The groups include: Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Tau, classes of 1965, 1969-75, 1990, 1994-96, and 2005.
A special event is the Coe Golden Reunion Dinner for the classes of 1964 and prior in Gage Memorial Union, with a reception beginning at 6 p.m.
On Sunday, Oct. 18, the Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia 85th anniversary lunch will be held at 10 a.m. in Clark Alumni House. A Lambda Chi Alpha brunch begins at 10:30 a.m. in Gage Memorial Union. Alumni soccer games include women’s at 11 a.m. and men's at noon, at Clark Field. Finally, an alumni-faculty-student jazz café featuring Alumni Council President Steve Kennedy '78 on bass begins at 2 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium.
