Water quality expert Mary Skopec will speak at Coe College on "Learning from the Floods of 2008: Water Quality Issues." The event will take place on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in Cherry Auditorium of Peterson Hall, located along College Drive. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Skopec is a research geologist in the watershed monitoring and assessment section at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). As supervisor of the water monitoring section during last June's floods, Skopec directed the state water monitoring program's response to the disaster. During the presentation, she will discuss what occurred with water quality in eastern Iowa during and after the floods.
The researcher has worked at the Iowa DNR since 1991 and has been involved in water quality projects including the development of a statewide pesticide database to track the occurrence of pesticides in Iowa's waters. Originally from Cedar Rapids, Skopec earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in geography from the University of Iowa, and completed a Ph.D. in environmental science.
