Joel Barrows

Iowa district court judge Joel Barrows will sign copies of his debut novel, "Deep White Cover," as part of the 2014 Homecoming program at Coe College.

Barrows, a 1983 graduate of Coe, will sign copies of his book at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 in the college Bookstore in Gage Memorial Union.

Before his appointment to the bench, Barrows was a practicing attorney for nearly 23 years, the last 18 of those spent as a state, and then federal, prosecutor. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in history, a law degree from Drake University, and a master's in international and comparative law with distinction from Georgetown University.

"Deep White Cover" is a unique and timely story that will entertain, as well as challenge readers from across the political spectrum to re-examine their views on immigration issues. It offers a warning of what could happen if the United States fails to secure its borders, allowing these groups to take matters into their own hands.

The author's considerable experience in state and federal law enforcement contributes to the accuracy of both dialogue and investigative techniques described. The reader is now an "insider."

The story involves the compelling dual narrative of one man facing the challenges of the Witness Protection Program while another faces the everyday threat of discovery as an undercover agent. The result: a powerful suspense drama that drives the story forward.

"Deep White Cover," 322 pages, is available in paperback for $14.84 from Crime Street Press or as an e-book from Amazon, iTunes, Barnes & Noble and other outlets. Copies will be available for purchase at the book signing, which is free and open to the public.
