|Associate Professor of History Derek Buckaloo|
The relationship between Hollywood and the Vietnam War will be examined in March at Coe College's Thursday Forum.
Beginning March 6, Associate Professor of History Derek Buckaloo will bring together his interests in both movies and the American war in Vietnam. He will begin by presenting the Vietnam War and its place in Americans' memories while introducing the relationship between the American film industry and the war.
In succeeding lectures, attendees will consider various well-known Vietnam War movies - from John Wayne's "The Green Berets" to Oliver Stone's "Platoon" and beyond - in order to see how the "genre" of the Vietnam War film was established and has changed over time as Americans grappled with the event. Presentations will include discussion of the significance, meaning and reception of these films, as well as the screening of crucial scenes for class consideration.
At the conclusion of this journey through a portion of Hollywood's Vietnam War, participants will have a deeper perspective on the ways in which movies make arguments about and create understandings of complicated historical events as well as how the war has been "refought" on American film screens as part of a contested process of trying to make cultural sense of the experience.
Thursday Forum lectures are held in Kesler Lecture Hall in Hickok Hall on the Coe campus. Each session begins with coffee and pastries from 8:45-9:15 a.m., followed by the class until 11:30 a.m. A luncheon is offered at the conclusion of each series.
The courses are open to all adults. The cost is $30 for a four-week course paid on the first day, or $12 per week. The closing luncheons cost an additional $8. Thursday Forum gift certificates are available. For more information about the Coe College Thursday Forum lecture series, call (319) 399-8619.
