The internationally renowned and critically acclaimed ensemble Morgenstern Trio will perform in a Coe College Marquis Series concert on Sunday, Nov. 10, beginning at 2 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students and seniors. Reserved seating is available by calling the Coe College Box Office at 319-399-8600, Monday - Friday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the event.
Catherine Klipfel (piano), Stefan Hempel (violin) and Emanuel Wehse (violoncello) united in 2005 at the Folkwang Academy in Essen, Germany. After only two years of collaboration, the group began making its mark, winning several important prizes. In 2009, the Morgenstern Trio won the prestigious Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award. The ensemble was also nominated for the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) "Rising Stars" series. These honors paved the way for the trio to travel to leading concert halls throughout Europe, including appearances in Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Cologne, Brussels and Stockholm. The ensemble's debut CD of works by Beethoven and Brahms was released in 2008.
The ensemble has particularly made a name for itself in Germany, leaving one reviewer from Rheinische Post to write, "The Morgenstern Trio gave an impressive testimonial of their instrumental and musical ability." A reviewer from Achener Zeitung characterizes the group as having "Sheer unbelievable virtuosity...(performing) chamber music of the highest level."
The Coe College Lecture and Performance Series is funded in part by a gift from the estate of Sarah Marquis in honor of her father, Dr. John A. Marquis, who was president of Coe College from 1909-1920. The purpose of the series is to bring entertainment and educational experiences to the Coe campus for the benefit of the entire community.
