Coe Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble to provide live soundtrack for "Rhapsody on Ice" skating performance

The Coe College Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble will provide a live soundtrack for "Rhapsody on Ice," featuring members of the Eastern Iowa Figure Skating Club. The concert and ice show spectacular will be held at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Saturday, Dec. 1, with programs at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door prior to each show.
Popular American classics will be performed by the Coe musical groups to accompany the skating, including "Strike Up the Band," "Embraceable You/I Got Rhythm," "American in Paris" and "Summertime" (from "Porgy and Bess") by George Gershwin as well as "Hoedown" from "Rodeo" and "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" by Aaron Copland. "Somewhere" and other selections from the musical "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein will also provide background for the skaters.
Additional favorites will include "Mack the Knife" by Kurt Weill, "For Once in My Life" by Ron Miller, "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky, "Baby It’s Cold Outside" by Frank Loesser, and "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson. The program will conclude with the rousing "76 Trombones" from "The Music Man" by Meredith Wilson.
Among the featured performers will be Coe students Josh Jung (tenor), Andrew Escalante (trumpet) and Isaac Work (tenor saxophone). Other soloists will include Tina Monroe (mezzo soprano), Angela Meisterling Billman (soprano), Stephen Brandt (tenor) and Craig Boche (vocals).
In addition to performances by local musical and skating artists, the event will feature the United States Figure Skating Senior Level Pairs Team of Tim LeDuc from Cedar Rapids and DeeDee Leng of Chicago.
The Coe College Concert Band is under the direction of William Carson, while the Coe College Jazz Ensemble is directed by Steve Shanley.
