Students from Coe College will be joining forces with their counterparts from Mount Mercy University and Kirkwood Community College for the second annual Cedar Rapids Dance Marathon (CRDM). This year’s event will be held at Mount Mercy’s Hennessey Recreation Center on Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
CRDM is a student-run philanthropic organization that provides year-round support to pediatric patients and their families with serious illnesses who are treated at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. These children may suffer from a variety of ailments - anything from major injuries and juvenile diabetes to premature births and birth defects.
As a unified effort involving students from the three Cedar Rapids area colleges, CRDM raised more than $25,500 in its first year of existence. Last summer, as the sponsor of the national college Dance Marathon program, Children's Miracle Network chose Cedar Rapids as the "Best New Dance Marathon 2011." This year’s challenge is for each dancer to raise $100, with the overall goal for the 2012 CRDM to raise $35,000.
More than 150 college students from Coe, Mount Mercy and Kirkwood are expected to participate in the 12-hour day of fun with no sitting, no caffeine and no sleep. Students and their supporters will come together to celebrate the money raised for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, and to meet patients and their families who have benefitted from this unique campaign. The CRDM will include live entertainment, a DJ and special performances by local bands.
