Four area educators with strong ties to Southeast Asia will bring the region home to Iowa at the opening Thursday Forum of the calendar year.
Coe Professor of Teacher Education and Associate Dean of the Faculty Terry McNabb has lived in and visited Thailand numerous times over the past 40 years. On Feb. 2, she will share her experiences with Thai food, language and customs, and will explore current issues in Thailand from the perspective of their Thai friends and colleagues.
University of Iowa Emeritus Professor of Education Scott McNabb will discuss several aspects of contemporary Buddhism in Thailand on Feb. 9. Monks walk daily through their local neighborhoods, collecting food and offering blessings. This transaction serves both giver and receiver. The session will examine this and other practices with videos and Buddhist artifacts from Thailand.
Coe Associate Professor of German John Chaimov visited a Burmese refugee camp in Thailand in 2009. In 2011, a family from that camp moved to Cedar Rapids. On Feb. 16, Chaimov will describe the conflict that has driven some Burmese from their country, document their life in refugee camps, and report on their new lives in the U.S.
Coe Associate Professor of History Derek Buckaloo teaches about the Vietnam War and regularly takes students on May Term travel courses to Vietnam. On Feb. 23, he’ll discuss Vietnam after the war and its complicated relationships to the war years and to American travelers of various kinds, including Coe students born years after the war.
The lectures will be held in Kesler Lecture Hall in Hickok Hall on the Coe campus. Each session begins with coffee and pastries from 8:45-9:15 a.m., followed by the class until 11:30 a.m. The series will conclude with a luncheon on Feb. 23.
The courses are open to all adults and registration is on-site. The cost is $30 for a four-week course or $10 per week. The closing luncheons cost an additional $8. Thursday Forum gift certificates are available. For more information about the Coe College Thursday Forum lecture series, call (319) 399-8619.
