Coe College has set several all-time records for its 2011 fall enrollment, including a record number of full-time students, the largest-ever number of students in residence and a record number of applications. Meanwhile, the average academic profile of the incoming students has strengthened.
Coe has registered 1,312 full-time students for fall term, the largest enrollment in its history, surpassing previous highs of 1,288 full-time students last fall and 1,245 set in 2005.
The college has an enrollment of 399 new students, including a record 361 first-year and 38 transfer students. In total, Coe has 1,378 full and part-time students registered for fall term.
While this year's incoming class is historically large, the profile of the new students builds upon the Coe tradition of academic quality. The class of 2015 has an average ACT score of 26 and grade point average of 3.7. All totaled, 58 first-year students scored 30 or greater on the ACT test. As well, more than 31 percent of first-year class members ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class.
As a residential college, Coe also has a record number of students – 1,107 – in campus housing for the fall term, up from last year’s record of 1,071. In addition, the college has 62 first-time ethnic minority students, representing more than 15 percent of the entering class and demonstrating Coe’s commitment to increasing diversity on its campus.
Coe received a record 2,592 applications for admission for the fall of 2011, the highest number in the college’s history. The class of 2015 comprises 48 percent Iowa residents and 52 percent out-of-state students. This year’s Coe class includes students from 21 states and 13 foreign countries.
“With impressive average test scores, grade point averages and high school classroom performance, our first-year students continue the tradition of academic excellence at Coe,” said Coe President James Phifer. “In addition, the large incoming class and record full-time enrollment are in line with the college’s multi-year plan to grow modestly. Our overall full-time student numbers indicate historically strong enrollment.
