The Coe Concert Band and Coe Jazz Band will perform in concert on Sunday, Nov. 21 beginning at 2 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. The event features the world premiere of a new band piece and classic Count Basie favorites. It is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Coe Music Professor William Carson, the Coe Concert Band will play music by Minnesota composer Daniel Kallman, who will be present for the concert. Among the pieces will be one of Kallman's most popular pieces, "The Jig Is Up," and the world premiere of his new work, "American Composer Limericks," featuring movements dedicated to Charles Ives, Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, and Sousa. The concert will also feature a beautiful composition by Cedar Rapids native and Jefferson High School graduate, Andrew Boyson, now director of bands at the University of New Hampshire.
The Coe Jazz Band, directed by Steve Shanley, will feature music from the library of Count Basie, including "Vine Street Rumble" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." Also included will be jazz classics "Summertime" by Gershwin and "Dat Dere" by Bobby Timmons, as well as "Ring of Fire" by Fred Sturm. For more information, call 399-8521.
