In addition to having taught viola at Coe College since 2005, Michael Kimber plays viola with Orchestra Iowa and is an active member of the Iowa Composers Forum.
The American Viola Society has recognized Dr. Kimber with a prestigious award for his contributions as a composer of music for viola. Many of his compositions for viola are widely performed in the U.S. and abroad, can be heard on CD and on YouTube, and have become part of the repertoire taught by leading viola pedagogues.
As a violist with ensembles as diverse as the Kronos Quartet, the Atlanta Virtuosi, and the Oread Baroque Ensemble he has performed in North America, Europe, and Australia. As a viola soloist he has been heard on Australian Broadcasting Commission programs and on National Public Radio's "Performance Today."
During a long career as a viola professor, first at The University of Kansas, then at The University of Southern Mississippi, he also served as principal violist of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, the Kansas City Camerata, and the Meridian Symphony Orchestra.
His viola studies were with Francis Bundra at Interlochen and the University of Michigan, and Raphael Hillyer, founding violist of the Juilliard String Quartet.
