Steve Shanley, M.M.
Director of Jazz Studies

Steve Shanley is Director of Jazz Studies at Coe College. He also works at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, where he teaches concert band, jazz band, marching band, music theory, and jazz improvisation. He previously taught orchestra and band at Franklin Middle School in Cedar Rapids, served as the jazz piano instructor at Drake University in Des Moines, and was the associate conductor of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Shanley has an active career as a multi-faceted keyboardist, playing for Broadway shows, local theatrical productions, jazz ensembles, symphony orchestras, rock bands, and other ensembles. He is the music director, arranger and keyboardist for Funk 101, an 11-piece funk and soul group. Shanley is also in demand as a composer, arranger, clinician, adjudicator, and accompanist. His works have been performed by marching bands, jazz bands, concert bands, symphony orchestras and choirs throughout the country. Shanley received his bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and his master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He was also the pianist and played percussion for the 1999 Disney Collegiate All-Star Band.

Shanley currently serves the Iowa chapter of the International Association for Jazz Education as president-elect, and he previously served as the chapter secretary. He and his wife, Valerie, reside in Marion and have two children.
