Alan Lawrence teaches Percussion and Percussion Techniques at Coe College, and is the founding director of the Cedar Rapids New Horizons Band, an activity for senior citizen musicians. He has also taught Enjoyment of Music, Film Music, and 20th Century Music History classes.
Mr. Lawrence has served as Principal Timpanist of the Cedar Rapids Symphony since 1988, and is also Principal Timpanist of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony and of the Cedar Rapids Opera Theater. He substitutes as timpanist of the Quad Cities and Dubuque Symphony Orchestras, and performs in the summer as Principal Percussionist of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, which he has guest conducted on several occasions. Prior to coming to Iowa he performed with the New Mexico and Santa Fe Symphony Orchestras, the Santa Fe Opera, and the American Wind Symphony of Pittsburgh PA.
Mr. Lawrence holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Texas Tech University and a M.M. in Performance from the University of New Mexico. His teaching experience includes the position of Percussion Specialist for the Georgetown, TX school band program (State 3A Champions in both Marching and Concert Performance), percussion instructor at Southwestern University and Midland College, and band director at St. Joseph's School in Marion, IA. Alan lives in Cedar Rapids with his wife Anita Tucker, Associate Concertmaster of the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra.
