Students of all ages can produce snow, create dragon's breath, shatter grapes and make ice cream with liquid nitrogen at the sixth annual Coe Playground of Science night. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 - 9 p.m. in Peterson Hall of Science on the Coe campus.
Students of all ages can produce snow, create dragon's breath, shatter grapes and make ice cream with liquid nitrogen at the sixth annual Coe Playground of Science night. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 - 9 p.m. in Peterson Hall of Science on the Coe campus. Faculty and students from the physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, nursing and psychology departments will provide demonstrations and facilitate hands-on opportunities to show that science can be fun.
A record 1,700 students participated in the popular event last year. For 2008, a variety of new presentations and demonstrations are planned, along with classic favorites. The Playground of Science is designed for elementary school students and their parents, but students of all ages are welcome to participate. There will be door prizes and fun throughout the evening.
The scientific demonstrations will be interactive and include shattering grapes, levitating things, and making dragon's breath using methanol/salts in flame. In addition, students can observe incredibly strong magnets, watch candy make a spray fountain out of soda, make snow, learn about the math of bubbles, and hear singing rods. Students can also see how chemistry allows for the creation of useful substances, make ice cream with liquid nitrogen, and see molten glass pour from a crucible. Models of hearts and eyes will be on display, and pumpkins will be launched into the air. By participating in the activities, students can learn about science and the natural world.
