Coe College’s Thursday Forum opens Sept. 1 in medieval Europe and ends April 26 with an exploration of environmental issues. In between, the 2011-12 academic calendar touches on 20th century music, the history of healing in America, Southeast Asia, and the order in chaos.

In the opening series, Coe faculty Bruce Nesmith, Joyce Janca-Aji, Andrea Kann and Marc Falk go behind the round table, and brave the Dark, to discuss the culture of medieval Europe. The sessions will dispel the myths and celebrate the impact medieval life continues to have today.

Beginning Sept. 29, Professor Emeritus of Physics Jim Cottingham and music historian Lou Pine explore the history of music in the 20th century through the fascinating lives and work of Leon Theremin and Robert Moog, important pioneers who developed electronic instruments before the digital era.

Coe nursing faculty Evelyn Moore, Brenda Shostrom, Jule Ohrt and Mary Louise Taylor will contrast current health care practices with those of the 18th and 19th centuries in the final forum of the calendar year.

The Thursday Forum new year opens 8,000 miles away in Southeast Asia. Coe faculty John Chaimov, Derek Buckaloo, Terry McNabb and Barbara Drexler, along with the University of Iowa’s Scott McNabb, will share their fascination with a place with deep connections to their Iowa work, interests and teaching in the opening forum of 2012.

Longtime forum attendees may remember that Coe College’s beloved Mathematics Professor Charles Lindsay presented a Thursday Forum titled “Order and Chaos” in 1991. Dean of the Faculty Marie Baehr revisits the topic in March in tribute to Dr. Lindsay, in the spirit of his love of learning, and guided by his forum notes, which Phyllis Lindsay presented to her last year, over a decade after her husband’s death in 1998.

Coe faculty Robert Marrs, David Hayes, Susan Wolverton and Marty St. Clair will explore various environmental issues in the final Thursday Forum of the academic year in April.

Thursday Forum lectures are held in Kesler Lecture Hall in Hickok Hall on the Coe campus. Each session begins with coffee and pastries from 8:45-9:15 a.m., followed by the class until 11:30 a.m. Each series concludes with a luncheon on the final Thursday.

The courses are open to all adults and registration is on-site. The cost is $30 for a four-week course or $10 per week. The closing luncheons cost an additional $8. Thursday Forum gift certificates are available. For more information about the Coe College Thursday Forum lecture series, call (319) 399-8619.
