Coe College purchased the Hampton Court Apartments in 2012 for conversion to housing for upper-class students. The facilities are located directly across from Stuart Hall and next to the Brewed Awakenings coffee shop. Although the Hampton Court Apartments are located just off campus, they are actually closer to Coe's main academic buildings than most of the college's residences.
Coe invested more than $1 million to renovate the two historical apartment buildings, which were originally constructed in 1914 and 1923. The project included new kitchen counter tops and cabinets, new appliances, energy-efficient windows, new lighting, and a fresh coat of paint throughout. Bathrooms in the units feature new plumbing fixtures and tub surrounds. The original hardwood floors were uncovered and refinished, which serve to enhance the overall appearance of the units. In addition, the exterior of the Hampton Court East building was repainted.
Students who live in these apartments enjoy the ambiance of living in traditional, urban buildings that are located on First Avenue, the "main street" of Cedar Rapids. The two buildings contain 39 apartment units that house approximately 80 students.
