The English program at Coe offers you the opportunity to develop critical thinking and communications skills that can be useful in most areas of work and professional training. The goal of the English Department is to provide students with a useful knowledge of literary works, both as art forms and as documents of history, culture, and behavior.
- Coe's English Department emphasizes attention to many cultures, regularly offering courses on literatures of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as the traditions of Western Europe, England and the United States.
- English majors have many opportunities to become involved in writing and publishing. Students can work on the newspaper and any of several literary magazines: The Coe Review, a journal of poetry and fiction; Colere, a journal devoted to writing about cultural exploration; and The Pearl, a journal of student- written non-fiction.
- Every member of the English faculty is a published professional writer, and most have continued active writing for publication throughout their careers: publishing novels, poetry, short stories, plays, essays, reviews, journalism, and several other genres.
