Communication Studies

The Rhetoric Department's Communication Studies collateral major is structured so that all students take a core of courses combining the study of classical and contemporary theories of communication with the fundamental development of writing and speaking skills.

Program Highlights

  • Small class size (courses are limited to between 16 and 24 students) allow plenty of individual attention from instructors.
  • Our various courses give you background in the major fields of communication studies: interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, persuasion, mass media, public speaking, non-verbal communication, public relations, research interviewing, and small group communication.
  • Many of our classes include service learning components that bring practical experience to theoretical knowledge: three-week intracultural immersion on a Lakota reservation, grant writing or brochure creation for nonprofit organizations, and teaching public speaking to elementary school students.
